Exploring England’s Historic Towns

Exploring England’s Historic Towns

While I love to travel to foreign countries and immerse myself in different languages and cultures, I also enjoy being a tourist in my own country. This trip back to the UK was a whistle-stop tour as we spent the majority of time celebrating Christmas and New Year with family as well as stocking up on some English essentials and hitting the high street sales. We were certainly kept busy but we still found time to get out and about in some of England’s most beautiful and historic towns.

Although East Anglia is one of the UK’s under appreciated tourist regions there is so much to see and do if you love the old-world charm of quaint little English market towns. With Her Majesty’s Christmas residence, Sandringham House, just down the road, Cambridge, home to one of the world’s oldest universities, a short train ride away from my home town, and Stamford ‘the finest stone town in England‘ in nearby Liconshire, we made sure to do some exploring of Gothic, Tudor and Georgian architecture across East Anglia.

Here are some photographs to tempt you to visit my beautiful region:

Stamford

Stamford was a new discovery for me and it is absolutely stunning. It has over 600 listed buildings including medieval churches and iconic red telephone boxes. Every street was a treat to the eyes.

Cambridge

Cambridge is always an excellent day out. It has everything you could want for in an English city. A direct train link to London, an abundance of dramatic gothic (mainly university) buildings, decent shopping and lots quirky cafes, bars and cosy pubs to relax in at the end of a busy day.  In the summertime the best way to explore the city’s architecture is to rent a punt or take a punting tour on the River Cam or do as the locals do and ride a bike around town. In the winter, evening draws in early in the UK so I made the most of the blue hour for some slightly different shots of various buildings.

…And finally we made it to the pub!

Sandringham

I didn’t take any photographs while in Sandringham this time as the weather was a bit too nippy for a proper stroll so we spent most of the afternoon in the gift shop and tea-rooms. It’s a great spot for afternoon tea!
